TrailO European Championships: Finnish gold medal in TempO

Petteri Hakala of Finland took a very clear victory in the TempO competition today, winning by a whopping 77 seconds. Marit Wiksell of Sweden won the silver medal and Antti Rusanen of Finland the bronze.

The event consisted of a Qualification in the morning with 2 heats, followed by a Final disputed by the first 18 of each heat. Located near Espoo, just outside of Helsinki, it was a ‘village’ terrain with many different types of terrain, including parks, playgrounds and areas with buildings. Some stations and tasks proved to be very difficult, and some big names failed to qualify for the finals.

The afternoon final took place in pouring, sometimes torrential rain. It was unpleasant, but the competitors are safe when taking on the tasks. Unfortunately the heaviest rain made some long distance kites too difficult for a few competitors to see, and one station had to be cancelled. The remaining six stations were fair throughout and the result was good competition, with the tension building as the best of the qualifying heats started last.

Petteri Hakala was one of the winners of the race and therefore started last, and it was he, TempO World Champion in 2018, who mastered the conditions best and emerged victorious. He is one of the youngest members of the strong Finnish team, and also one of the most consistent. Finland finished with three athletes in the top six.

There is one event left at the Championships – the three-man relay, in Classes O and P, tomorrow.
