The World Youth Orienteering Competition will be breathtaking

The World Youth Orienteering Championship will be held from September 4 to 10 with the support of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality. The championship, which will be held with the participation of 31 athletes from 270 countries, will start from the town square of Izmit.


The launch of the 2021 JWOC Junior Orienteering World Championship was held at Maide Restaurant. Deputy Governor of Kocaeli Ali Ada, Deputy Mayor of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Yaşar Çakmak, Turkish Orienteering Federation President Hacer Akyüz, International Orienteering Federation Vice President Tatyana Kalender , the Event Director of the World Youth Orienteering Championship and the Foreign Relations Board of the Turkish Orienteering Federation. President Gökhan Ünal, President of Kocaeli Amateur Sports Clubs Federation Murat Aydın, Provincial Director of Youth and Sports of Kocaeli İbrahim Aktürk and Branch Directors, Head of Department of Youth and Sports Services Şemsettin Yıldırım were present.


With the support of the Youth and Sports Services Department of the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, the JWOC 2021 Youth Orienteering World Championship will be organized by the Turkish Orienteering Federation and the Ministry of Youth and sports. The organization, which will be attended by a total of 31 people, including 270 athletes and technical teams from 349 countries, will start from downtown Izmit. The championship award ceremony, which will last 7 days, will take place on September 10 in Gebze.


Deputy Mayor of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, Yaşar Çakmak, said that as Kocaeli, they are very happy to host the World Youth Orienteering Championship, and said, “As Metropolitan Municipality of Kocaeli, we are proud to host the World Youth Orienteering Championship, which could not be held in 2020 and was postponed to this year due to the pandemic. Our friends started their work months ago in order to welcome you to Kocaeli in the best possible way. As a result of the meetings held with the officials of the International Orienteering Federation, the tracks, tracks, starting and finishing points have been carefully determined. Many other technical details such as transport, map printing, calendar, event center emerged as a result of joint work. 2021 athletes from 31 countries will participate in the 270 World Youth Orienteering Championship to be held in our city. As you can see, we are having another very full and busy championship in Kocaeli. I sincerely believe that we will leave this organization with a clear conscience, thanks to the diligent and dedicated work of our officials and friends of the federation.


Stating that the championship will take place on the determined tracks in Izmit and Gebze from September 4 to 10, Çakmak said: “Our athletes will participate in the sprint race in the city center of Izmit, as well as in the qualifications and finals of middle distance in Gebze Mudarli.Then the stages of the long distance race and the relay race will be held in Gebze Denizli.On Saturday September 4, we will organize a procession and an opening ceremony in the square of our city at the center of Izmit At our opening ceremony, our athletes will first form a procession in the city center where they will carry the flags of their own countries. ‘Izmit, athletes from each participating country will be introduced and place their own country flags on the areas near the stage.At the opening ceremony, which we plan to turn into a visual feast, stage performances will be held at to introduce Turkish culture to our foreign guests.


Stating that Kocaeli is hosting an important event, Turkish Orienteering Federation President Hacer Akyüz said, “We were very excited when we applied for the Youth World Championship. Our joy increased even more when it was decided that it would be held in Turkey in 2020. Then our discussions began. The unity of institutions and the support of local government are very strong here. We have now come to the final stage of this organization. From today, our organization has begun. 7 countries came here to camp. 31 athletes from 270 countries will compete for the championship. A serious working process took place in Kocaeli. “Young people await the race with four eyes”

Expressing that young people are looking forward to the race, the Vice-President of the International Orienteering Federation, Tatyana Kalender, said: “Orienteering is a difficult sport. Kocaeli is a very suitable city for this sport. His nature is conducive to this sport. This race is very important for young people. Young people are impatient because it could not be done in 2020 because of the pandemic. We are all looking forward to this race. The eyes of the whole world will be on these races. I would like to thank those who have contributed to the organization and the Metropolitan Municipality of Kocaeli for their support. I wish success to all our athletes in the races,” he said.


Highlighting that Kocaeli is a sports city, Deputy Governor Ali Ada said, “The Youth Orienteering World Championship could not be held in 2020 due to the pandemic. The Youth Orienteering World Championship will be held in our city this year. It is important for us that the organization, which will take place from September 4 to 10, is held in Kocaeli. This will be an indication that Kocaeli is not just an industrial city, but a sports city. In this context, we ensure that the event takes place in our city. He congratulated all the staff, especially the Mayor of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, Tahir Büyükakın, who contributed. I wish our athletes success,” he said.


Orienteering, which consists of orienting yourself with the help of maps, is a sport against the clock. Although it can be played in different terrain conditions, this sport is usually played in forest areas. Athletes try to achieve the goals indicated on the map of the competition area given to them, respectively, and as soon as possible.
