The Orienteering Club Organizes the Boxing Day Adventure

The Isle of Man Orienteering Klubb (IOMOK) held their annual Boxing Day Orienteering event at Archallagan Forest.

Over 100 people of all ages showed up to participate in the family event on a wet and foggy morning.

Participants set off in different directions from a mass start, having one hour to find as many orienteering flags and pin their scorecard as they could in any order.

With many different options of choosing routes and check flags to visit at various locations in the forest, this event provided different levels of navigational challenge for people of varying abilities.

Some participants enjoyed the competitive sailing challenge with other participants or between family and friends while walking or running.

For some participants it was a chance to meet and hang out with friends or family and undertake an event that engaged everyone in the activity.

IOMOK would like to thank “everyone who came out and braved the wet conditions to put on another special orienteering event on the Isle of Man”.

“Thank you also to the DEFA and the various people who helped organize the event, plan and define the route, manage the registrations and results and collect the flags at the end of the event”.

The winners were:

1st group Hannah Scarlett

2nd Aoibhinn Tastagh Group

Family group (adults and children under 16):

1st James Mylcherest Family

3rd Family Matt Callister

IOMOK Treasurer Tony Garratt said: “It was good to see new people attending the Boxing Day Orientation event this year, with some attendees indicating that they enjoyed the event and would like do more guidance in the future.’

IOMOK Development Manager William Higgins added: ‘We have a variety of orienteering events planned throughout 2022 and I will also continue to undertake the development of permanent orienteering courses across the island.

“This will provide more opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to take up orienteering as a healthy and inexpensive recreational activity on the Isle of Man that can help exercise the mind and body.”
