Students are ready for adventure at the School Orienteering Championships, Belair National Park May 23

Students from across South Australia will compete in the 2022 South Australian Schools Orienteering Championships, taking place at Belair National Park on May 23.

Many students graduate from an intensive after-school program run by top sports organization Orienteering SA to teach map reading, navigation, and route-selection.

Competitors will use an orienteering map to navigate through the intricate trails, parks and bushland of Belair, following a course set by former elite orienteering champion Jenny Casanova for the occasion.

Schools represented include: Adelaide Botanic High School, Stirling East, Linden Park, Unley High, Black Forest, Adelaide High, Mitcham Girls, Glenunga International, St Johns Grammar, Urrbrae High, Reynella East College, Marryatville High, Goodwood Primary, Heathfield High, Hawthorndene Primary, The Heights, Echunga Primary, Woodside, Coromandel Valley, St Martin de Porres and St Thomas in Goodwood.

Orienteering is an international adventure sport in which competitors navigate independently through urban or bush terrain to complete a course in the shortest possible time. Competitors use a specialized map that allows them to locate a number of set checkpoints.

The Orienteering SA Schools program has so far been conducted in eight school zones:

  • Adelaide Center
  • Mitcham Hills
  • Northeastern suburbs
  • Woodside/Lobethal
  • Echunga
  • southern suburbs
  • Lower and Middle North Schools
  • Stirling East
