Orienteering SA Coach Named Head Coach of USA World Junior Orienteering Championships Team

Adelaide, 9 May 2022: Orienteering SA is proud to announce that Residence Coach Evalin Brautigam has been named the Head Coach of the United States Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) Practice Team, as well as being selected for the United States World Orienteering Championships (WOC) elite sprint team. .

The appointment follows the announcement that five members of Ms Brautigam’s elite training squad have been selected to the national teams that will represent Australia at three major international events this year: the World orienteering in Denmark in June; Junior World Orienteering Championships to be held in Portugal in July; and the World University Championships to be held in Switzerland in August.

Ms Brautigam, who majored in sports science at the University of North Carolina, arrived in South Australia in 2019 for an initial six-month training program, just before the restrictions came into force. COVID trip. Since then, she has been instrumental in nurturing award-winning orienteers and growing the sport statewide.

“Evalin was the silver lining of the pandemic for us,” said Orienteering SA President Rob Tucker. “She had a huge impact and was a huge asset to all of our orienteers, leading our elite junior and senior teams to major victories in national competitions.

“She has been instrumental in the success of our Sporting Schools programs and supported our mission to make orienteering accessible to all kinds of people, from young families to groups of friends to trail runners who want to try orienteering. orienteering.”

Orienteering SA’s new head coach, Bridget Uppill, a former elite orienteer and ACT-based coach, said Ms Brautigam’s “guidance and wisdom” across all orienteering disciplines had increased the quality and the scope of training and events.

“Evalin has set the bar high, she is passionate about training and has been running three to four workouts a week flawlessly for the past three years,” Ms Uppill said.

“Evalin introduced us to the Spond sports app to set up a remote training program during COVID and we continue to use the app today to set up workouts for elites and regular orienteers who want learn or improve.

“I now look forward to growing our coaching staff to ensure we increase participation rates and build on our strong performance in our schools, elites and newcomer programs.”
