From archeology in western North Carolina to Indigenous nations in 18th-century South Carolina to contemporary portraits of the citizens of Catawba, USC Lancaster’s Center for Native American Studies offers three new exhibits for guests this month.

“Unarthing Our Forgotten Past: Fort San Juan,” opened Wednesday, August 10 at the downtown Red Rose Gallery. Developed by the Exploring Joara Foundation as part of the 450th anniversary celebrations of the Juan Pardo expeditions to western North Carolina, this exhibit showcases the Spanish occupation of Fort San Juan and the lives of the natives who lived in the area. of Joara.
