Mass Start wins for Søgaard and Pokala in WMTBOC

Wednesday’s Mass Start race gave athletes from the Mountain Bike Orienteering World Championships the last chance to medal at competitions in Sweden.

And Samuel Pokala (FIN) and Camilla Søgaard (DEN) reached out and won their first WMTBOC gold medals after winning other medals earlier.

In the women’s mass start, Camilla Søgaard kept fighting and finished five seconds ahead of long distance world champion, Emily Benham Kvåle (GBR), with Czech Martina Tichovska three minutes behind.

This is Søgaard’s first gold medal in Sweden, but his fifth after five races in Sweden.

Samuel Pokala’s gold in the men’s race was far superior, winning by almost two minutes. Davide Machado (POR) won the silver medal fight one second ahead of Krystof Bogar (CZE) and with Simon Braendli (SUI) a few seconds further behind.

Pokala won a silver medal in the middle distance race on Friday.

The Mass Start was the sixth of eight competitions in the 2022 CX80 World Cup. Camilla Søgaard has a clear 69-point lead ahead of fellow Dane Nikoline Splittorff, while Krystof Bogars leads the Men’s World Cup just five points over Samuel Pokala. .

Karina Nurminen (FIN) won her fourth gold in the W20 and Felix Silver (SWE) her third gold in the U20.
