JWOC Sprint Golds for Finland and Sweden

Elisa Mattila of Finland and Axel Elmblad of Sweden are the new junior world sprint champions after the first day of competition at the Junior World Orienteering Championships in Aguiar da Beira, Portugal.

The courses in the old town of Carapito offered technically demanding orienteering where seconds could easily be lost in the narrow roads.

But Elisa Mattila kept her composure and avoided any wasted time and at the finish she was 13 seconds ahead of silver medalist, Lilly Graber, SUI. Anna Karlov (CZE) was six seconds behind and took the bronze medal.

In the men’s category, Axel Elmblad overtook last year’s bronze medal at the 2021 JWOC in Turkey and won by an impressive 26 seconds. Tobias Alstad (NOR) finished second, while three athletes shared bronze, Mikkel Holt (NOR), Basile Basset (FRA) and Ilian Angeli (ITA).

JWOC will continue on Wednesday with the Sprint Relay, which is added to the JWOC program due to the ban on forestry activities in Portugal.
