Galway Orienteers Fall / Spring Orientation Events 2021-2022

The Galway Orienteers’ The Western Eagles orienteering events for fall 2021 begin with an event on Sunday 10e October in Coole Park, Gort.

Tee times are 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and registration is done online at There is no registration on this day.

There are 3 courses, long 4.1k, medium 3.5k and short 2.4k. The sportident timing system will be used and SI cards will be issued the same day. Tomasz Dabrowski and Padraic Higgins are in charge.

The Connacht Region Orienteering Championships take place on Sunday 24e October at Woodlawn Wood near New Inn. The host club is Galway Orienteers and details will be available at

The course planner is Derek Conerney and the controllers are Padraic Higgins and Henry Mullen.

Sunday 14e November Ballyloughane, Galway is the place. Departure times are 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The starting point is on the promenade.

There will be 2 courses, short easy and a bit longer and harder with sections of the course on both sides of the sheet. Participants take the course in order 1 to 10 etc. The organizers of this event are Frank Ryan and Martin Flynn

The last local event before Christmas is in Esker, Athenry on Sunday 28e November, with a later start time of 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.. Owen Boyhan and Maja Drapiewska are handling this event.

Spring events resume with an event at Cregg Castle hosted by Derek Conerney and Ross Houlihan on Sunday 6e February 2022. Departure times are 11 am to 12 noon. Parking is limited here, so group leaders planning to bring groups should contact club secretary Frank Ryan at [email protected] before the event.

The next event will take place at Portumna Forest Park on Sunday 23e February hosted by Henry Mullen and Emer Durkan with tee times from 11am to 12pm.

Rosscahill Wood is the venue for the orienteering race on Sunday 8e March. Martin Flynn is the planner for this event and the classes here should present a different challenge than the pre-Christmas events. Departure times are 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Padraig Higgins is the event organizer at Monivea Woods on Sunday 20e March with much later start times from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

For orienteers looking for an Easter holiday with an orienteering course, the JK Orienteering Festival takes place in the North East of England, in the North Yorkshire moors, from Friday to Monday during the Bank Holiday of Easter.

A scatter event closer to Galway will take place on Sunday 10the April at Kilcornan Woods, Clarenbridge. Parking will be at the Colga football field. There will be a short scatter event of 9 checks and a longer one of 18 checks. The controls can be visited in any order. The start time for this event is 12 hours. However, participants must arrive to register approximately half an hour before the start time.

Kylebrack, Loughrea is the venue for the event on Sunday 24e April and Padraic Higgins are in charge of this event.

Registration is open to all events and the fees for all of the above events except championships are € 8 per person, children € 6, € 20 maximum for a family and groups of 10 or more are € 4 per person.

The 2022 Irish Orienteering Championships will take place in the Munster region on the May Bank Holiday weekend. The host club is Kerry Orienteers so events are likely to be in Kerry.
