Dromahane Suicide Awareness Fundraiser

We would like to thank everyone who participated in the Stephens Day Walk to benefit Suicide Support in Dromahane. It’s still very well supported. Mary Lynch has been providing counseling services in Charleville for 3 years through fundraising from our annual walk and clothing collection bins. This is such an important service and the incredible help Mary has given callers is fantastic.

Climb with Charlie

The Mount Hillary Athletics Club hosted a rock climb with Charlie on Friday April 1 at 5:30 p.m. from the main gate of Mount Hillary. Proceeds will go to charities chosen by Charlie Bird, Motor Neuron Disease and Pieta. All donations are welcome on D-Day.

A mobile coffee van will also be available later. Everyone is welcome to join us, bring your family and friends. Great way to start the weekend.

Banteer Lyre GAA

Club membership for 2022 is now collected by club officers. If you wish to be a full voting member of Banteer/Lyre GAA for 2022, you must be paid by March 31.

Membership is as follows: €50 Full Membership; €30 social membership; Youth membership €30. Thank you for supporting Banteer & Lyre GAA Club.

GAA Referees Course

Colm Lyons, Head of Referee Recruitment for Cork GAA is now running the Referees Foundation Level 1 course. Contact Banteer Lyre GAA for more information.

The Referee Foundation Level 1 course is a blended course, ie. there are parts you have to do online and there are two face-to-face sessions. Attached to this email you will find instructions on how to register online and access the online modules. Online, you will need to complete two modules before attending the face-to-face sessions.

The first online module is an interactive video module called Powers and Duties of an Arbitrator. The second online module is an interactive video module called Referee Safeguarding.

You must complete these modules online before attending the face-to-face sessions. Head-to-head sessions for the Avondhu, Duhallow and Carrigdhoun divisions will take place on Wednesday March 16 and Wednesday March 23. Each evening’s sessions will begin at 7:30 p.m. sharp and end at 9:30 p.m.

The last part of the course is an online rules test. You must complete all parts of the online modules, attend both evenings and pass the rules test before receiving your Referee Foundation Level 1 certificate and referee equipment. Each new referee will receive a set of referee equipment which includes a referee shirt, referee shorts and socks.

Road improvements

Last Friday in the Municipal District of Cork County Council there was an announcement of the roads in the district which would be included in the Road Improvement and Restoration Grants. There was good news for the parish of Castlemagner as the list includes the following roads in the community: Coolnamagh Cross to Cecilstown (L201), Whittles Cross to Kilguilky (L1048) and the drainage on Ballyhass to Castlemagner Road (L1202).

Seachtain na Gaeilge

The Seachtain na Gaeilge de Comhrá agus Tae (conversation, talk and tea) evening held on Wednesday March 9th in the community of Castlemagner was a lovely evening which attracted a lot of people. Isabel Hynes delighted the audience with traditional harp music. There was a lot of laughter and everyone used their cupla focail.

The group had decided that they would like to meet again for a few more evenings. There will be a group of beginners who would like to learn some basic Irish so they can have a simple conversation and a Comhrá group who would like to use their Irish.

Ballyhass NS

Sixth graders had a fun day at the Cork Orienteering Championship held at Tramore Valley Park last week. Congratulations to Colm, who took first prize in the sixth Class Boys category and to Ava and Aisling, who finished third in the sixth Class Girls category.

Castlemagner and Cecilstown playground.

The Castlemagner and Cecilstown Playground Group committee worked quietly behind the scenes and submitted the planning for the proposed playground. It is hoped that a large percentage of the costs will be subsidized, however, some of the costs will need to be funded by the community.

Now that the Covid restrictions have been lifted, the committee is excited to kick off with a golf classic on Monday June 6th. Clothing collection

A clothing drive will take place on Friday March 25, Saturday and Sunday March 26 and 27. Clothes can be left in the room. This year we CAN take the following items: – Clean good quality clothes, pairs of shoes, bags and belts, quilts and blankets in good clean condition and rags (old, worn, torn or stained clothes).

Please keep good clothes and rags in separate bags and please label the outside of the bag with a label indicating good clothes/rags. The clothing drive helps support most initiatives run by the CCDA and is also part of the community’s sustainability/recycling plan. Thank you for your support and please let others know of collection dates.

Spring cleaning

The annual spring cleaning will be hosted by the Tidy Towns for the weekend of March 2. Last year we had huge support with an army of over 100 volunteers who made sure every road in the parish was cleared of rubbish. It was an incredible show of community spirit, and we hope this year will be just as successful.

The Tidy Towns Committee is looking for a volunteer from each road/townland to help coordinate and let people in their immediate area know that spring cleaning is underway. The Tidy Towns committee has bags, gloves, high visibility vests and litter pickers that will be available to volunteers. Tea and refreshments will be served in the lobby from 12:30 p.m. Any help welcome.

We would just ask that children only help pick up litter on the quieter roads as traffic moves at high speed on the main roads. All volunteers are requested to wear high visibility vests and gloves.

Group stretching and tonicity lessons.

Castlemagner Community Development Association (CCDA) is launching a six week stretching and toning course with an experienced fitness trainer from Cork City. This training method is a total stretching and toning of all body muscles using resistance bands during each workout.

It improves strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. This in turn improves day-to-day physical performance in daily chores, hobbies and sports, while maximizing the possibility of injury-freeness. This is an appropriate exercise approach for people of all ages, whether you exercise regularly or want to take your first steps into physical activity after a while.

We offer a six-week stretching and toning exercise program every Friday from April 8th to May 13th. We will provide each participant with a set of resistance bands. There are two group times available each group has a maximum of 20 places.

Group of over 50s: from 4.30 p.m. to 5.15 p.m. Group of 18-40 year olds: from 5.30 p.m. to 6.15 p.m. Price: €90 (covers 6 weeks of lessons)

Red FM Division 3 HL Group: Meelin take on Kilbrittain on Sunday March 27 at 12pm at Kilbrittain. It’s the first league game of 2022, we wish the guys the best as the year begins again.
